HEALTH EDUCATION COURSES
HEALTH PROMOTION AND PROTECTION (8505) Grade 9 1.25 Credits
Required 1/4 year
This course is designed to teach students how to properly respond to emergencies they may face in today’s society. Students will learn CPR, AED, and basic first aid procedures from certified American Red Cross instructors. An emphasis will be placed on giving students the information they need to make informed and healthy decisions for their body and mind. Additional topics will include: STD’s, HIV and AIDS, non-infectious diseases, and public health care choices.
DRIVER EDUCATION (9513) Grade 10 1.25 Credits
Required 1/4 year
This course is designed to reduce motor vehicle accidents and save lives through the student’s conceptual understanding of defensive driving and accident prevention. Positive social attitudes, respect for the driving privilege, knowledge and respect for traffic safety and natural laws, and the development of a sense of responsibility based upon sound driving principles are emphasized.
DRUGS / ALCOHOL & CPR: A SOCIAL PERSPECTIVE (9523) Grade 11 1.25 Credits
Required 1/4 year
This course is designed to address the various social pressures and decisions facing high school students today. Emphasis has been placed on expanding students' understanding of the physical, mental, emotional, and social effects of the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Topics include: patterns of chemical dependency, intervention strategies, enabling and codependency, family roles, federal laws regarding chemical substances, and the social ramifications of drug abuse.
HUMAN SEXUALITY AND FAMILY LIVING (9533) Grade 12 1.25 Credits
Required 1/4 year
As the culmination of the health education experience in the grade 12 course, students will learn relevant information needed to make independent, intelligent, informed decisions pertaining to areas of human sexuality and family living. An emphasis will be placed on increasing students' awareness of the issues surrounding these areas, as well as introducing and reinforcing the critical thinking skills needed to deal with relationship issues in a whole-life context.

ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION (8599-9599-9596 9597) Grades 9-12 5 Credits
Placement in this course is made upon referral from the Child Study Team. Individualized and small group instruction consistent with the Individual Education Plan is provided for each student referred.
OPTION II (9592) Grades 12 3.75 Credits
Option II provides students with the opportunity to meet the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in a setting other than the traditional classroom. Student-athletes may choose between three paths towards their PE requirement by: Path A (for 12th graders): Participation in two or more NJSIAA-recognized Varsity sports or two seasons of Varsity cheerleading at the high school, OR Path B (for 12th graders): Participation in one NJSIAA-recognized Varsity sport or Varsity cheerleading at the high school, plus documented off-season-training (150 minutes/week) in the same sport/cheer with an organization approved by the principal.
