Multilingual Learner Program (ML/ELL/ESL)

Multilingual Learner Program (ML/ELL/ESL)

The Old Bridge Township School District believes multilingualism is an asset which has been widely proven to increase students' academic scores, critical thinking skills and communication abilities. Our district provides a multilingual learner program (formerly ELL) for students who need instruction in English as a second language. While we aim to optimize students' performance in English-based subject area classes, the district fosters an inclusive and dynamic environment where the use of multiple languages is encouraged, and cultural awareness is fostered. The goal of the program is to provide English language instruction to prepare children so that they perform successfully in all classes. The ML teachers work with classroom teachers to help children develop English language skills, cultural awareness and learning strategies they will need to succeed in school and in the community. We strive for students to acclimate and integrate into our schools in order to facilitate the transition into a new community. With this in mind, we assure that all students have equal access to classes, clubs, before and after school services, and all academic, extracurricular, athletics and arts programs.

Our current district ML enrollment is approximately 230 students who represent over 35 countries and 31 different languages. Students receive daily pull-out instruction where teachers individualize learning and plan for maximum time on student communication and language practice. The program offers a curriculum designed to teach students listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary for success in school. Participation in this program will help your child succeed in school.

Our district follows New Jersey Department of Education protocol with respect to identifying and providing services for multilingual learners. We use the WIDA Screener to identify ML eligibility. Students who have been identified as ML are required to take the ACCESS for ELLs assessment each spring to determine exit from the program. Along with a multiple criteria checklist, students must earn a 4.5 (on a 6.0 scale) on the ACCESS for successful exit from the program. Students with special needs must earn an A3 score on the ALTERNATE ACCESS for ELLs assessment and also follow the checklist for "Multiple Criteria" in order to exit the program. Exited students' progress is closely monitored to assure success in the general education classroom.
